Question

Is a man permitted to be treated by a female dentist, dental hygienist, or have blood tests done by a female nurse? And is a woman permitted to be examined by a male family doctor, or go to a gynecologist for pregnancy follow-up, birth control insertion, or an ultrasound?

Answer

A man should not be treated by a female doctor, and similarly, a woman should not be treated by a male doctor. However, under the following conditions, it is permissible:

a. When there is a serious illness and not just a minor discomfort. b. If there is no doctor of the same gender who treats this problem, or one is not currently available and it is an urgent medical need. c. When precautions are taken against Yichud (seclusion prohibitions).

If a female doctor is available, but the male doctor is more specialized in that field and it’s a serious illness, it is permissible. In all these cases, financial expense and travel inconvenience should not be a consideration. See the detailed explanations for the practical conclusions regarding each specific matter.

PLEASE NOTE*

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
