Question

Shalom Rav

I wanted to ask, to what extent should I direct the prayer deeply?

It’s hard for me to do that during the whole prayer, so I end up saying the words but not understanding most of the meaning behind them.

Thank you

Hello & Greetings

The deep meaning of the words does not inhibit, although it is certainly desirable and good.

The main intention required in prayer is divided into two:

  • To aim or even just to know that we are standing in prayer before the Holy King of Kings.

  • Understand the meaning of the words we say in prayer.

Beyond that, the deep meaning of the words and the intention of the request in them is desirable and useful, but not hindering, and is not required in order to fulfill the obligation to pray.

It is important to add that in retrospect, those who prayed and did not have intention in their prayers, even if they did not intention in the 3 brachot of ‘shmoneh esreh’, do not repeat prayers in our time that we are not held to be intentional in all prayers.

Best regards

Rabbi David Ohayon

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him.
