Question

Hello, Your Honorable Rabbi

I have a question,

My 20-year-old son bought a new car, it cost $5500. I paid for it and then he paid me $2,000 back for a year from his paycheck.

When I bought the car, I used my credit card and got $45 in points

Should I give him some of the points even though the points come from Bank of America, not from him because he didn’t pay interest of course?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

You do not need to give your son some of the points you received, as the points were not given as a benefit to the person who purchased the car, but were given to you as a benefit from the bank following your use of credit card payment.

Without a doubt, the reason they give these points is to encourage the use of credit cards, because they benefit from using credit.

Therefore, the gift is also intended for the credit card holder who chose to use this means of payment, and there is no waiting for the person who purchased the car.

Best regards

Rabbi David Ohayon

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him.
