Question

Who is considered an old man to be respected? Older than you or from your family?

Answer

From the law of the Torah, every person from the age of seventy years we must rise for him, we owe his dignity from the mitzvah of “glorifying the face of the elder,” and according to the Kabbalah, from the age of sixty, the mitzvah has already begun to rise before him and glorify him.

However, the mitzvah of honoring an older brother or an older sister, the poskim were divided as to whether the mitzvah is for the older brother in the family or the actual older brother, and it should be stricter to honor every older brother.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
