Question

Hi, I recently found out from a friend that we must study everything we can and as much as we can, even though we don’t understand this. Instead of learning one thing very well and understanding it, is this true and if so why?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

The main mitzvah of Torah study is to learn and understand, until the words of the Torah are clear to the learner and know how to answer clearly any question on the subject he has studied.

However, there is also interest in devoting some time to studying things that one does not understand, such as the Psalms and Zohar, because the holy books say that the study in these books purifies the soul and affects man with great abundance.

Moreover, if a person tries to understand and does not succeed in his shortness of understanding, there is an interest in learning a little time even things that he does not understand, because by doing so in the future he will gain understanding in these parts of the Torah.

However, the main studding in the holy Torah must be in things that he can understand, and if you do not understand Talmud and poskim, you will deal with books of halacha and morality that are equal to every soul and written in a clear language, and with time and effort you will advance and understand even books that you did not understand at first.

Best regards

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
