Question

Shalom Rav,

Is it possible to use an Orthodox ketubah in a Reform ceremony??

Thank you.

Answer

Hello & Greetings

First congratulations on the occasion of the wedding joy

It is certainly possible and even appropriate to use an Orthodox ketubah during the Chuppah and Kiddushin, because it is forbidden for spouses to be married without a ketubah.

But it is important to know that a Reform marriage ceremony is not considered marriage at all according to halacha, and the couple is considered by the Torah as unmarried spouses, and this has many implications, because their children are also considered as if they were born without a chuppah and kiddushin, which is a great shame.

The Chuppah status is inspired by the Shechina, because a couple who establish a home among the people of Israel, the Shechinah descends to dwell between them, so it is very important that the Chuppah be conducted in the best possible way according to Judaism, in a halachically correct manner in holiness and exaltation. A Reform chuppah is not a chuppah according to Jewish law, and G-d is not a position that dwells in such a chuppah, which is a shame.

I wish you the best on your wedding day, and bless you that you will have the privilege of establishing a holy and uplifting home of love and joy, according to the tradition of Israel in a proper chuppah and sanctification, in the Ketubah and in the seven blessings according to the religion of Moses and Israel.

Congratulations

  1. Thank you for the response Rabbi. We want an orthodox wedding ceremony. But we just found out my Son’s fiancé mother had a reform conversion. We are having a problem. Can you help. Any suggestions.

    1. Because according to the Halacha, a reform conversion is not a conversion, and according to this it is quite possible that your son’s fiancee is not Jewish, and for your son to be able to marry her she will have to convert with an Orthodox conversion and accept the burden of the mitzvot as a religion and law.
