Hello rabbi

can a pregnant women pray at the cemetery?

תשובה

Hello,

As a matter of law, there is no prohibition or impediment for a pregnant woman to enter the cemetery.

However, it is the custom of women not to come to the cemetery when she is pregnant, because there is a spirit of impurity there, and a pregnant woman should keep herself the most of any evil spirit or impurity.

Therefore, if there is no special need, it is preferable that a pregnant woman does not enter the cemetery, but instead of a need such as going to the grave on the 7th or 30th or the yartzait, insofar as it causes grief if she does not participate in the ascension to the grave, she may also go when she is pregnant, and it is preferable that she stand at a distance of four ‘amot’ from the graves.

Likewise, there is nothing to prevent a pregnant woman from going to the graves of the righteous, because in the graves of the righteous there is not an evil spirit, but a spirit of purity and holiness.

Multiple regards

PLEASE NOTE*

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
