Question

I have a son named Adrian and someone told me that Hadrian was a Roman emperor who was suppressed the jewish people in past. Adrian has not a bad meaning and it means sea and adriatic. In addition, my son also have a jewish name jacob. My question is, should we change his name? Name changing has cuse many troubles and may have effects on his spirits.

Answer

Indeed, Hadrian is very bad for the people of Israel[1], and therefore there is  a place for your question, that children should not be called with the names of wicked because it negatively affects them [2]. And all the more so with regard to the name of a non-Jew, and the Maharam Shik wrote [3] that anyone who call the names of the Gentiles violates the prohibition of what it is said “and will distinguish you from the nations and because of their constitutions you will not go”, and there is still room to expand on this.

However, from what I understand from your words, the real name of the child (who was called at the time of the circumcision) is “Yaakov”, but as is the custom of people to have a name in Hebrew and a different name in English. So his name in foreign language is not his real name, but it is a kind of nickname that is called him, and it does not have such an effect as the real name, so since you are finally not aiming to name him after the evil Hadrian, it is ok.

Moreover, there is also a change in his name that is “Adrian” and not “Hadrianos”, as the Ya’abetz wrote [4] a change of one letter is useful so that it is not considered to be named after evil

And it should also be added to what you wrote that the name itself has a good meaning, because Maran ha-Hida Zaleh[7] wrote that when the meaning of the name is good, such as “Ishmael” (that he will hear God and save them) you can call the name even that there is evil with this name [8].

But in order to have a good effect on the child, it is worthwhile from time to time to call him by his Jewish name, “Yaakov”, after the fathers of Yaakov Avinu, and he will do so at least once a month, and review what we have extended in this elsewhere.
