Question

There is a non kosher grill at our place, is there any way we can use it? I appreciate your help

Answer:

1). If it is an electric grill, if it can reach a temperature of 371 degrees Celsius, then it must be cleaned thoroughly with degrading substances and then turned on for about twenty minutes on maximum heat, and it is permissible to use this grill.

2). However, if the electric grill does not reach that heat, do not use the grill. However, if it is possible to replace the rack (net), it is permissible to use the BBQ, after thorough cleaning and lighting for 20 minutes at maximum heat, even if does not reach a temperature of 371 degrees.

3). If the grill is not electric but an open fire BBQ, you should in any case replace the rack and observe the ‘tinfoil’ around the edges and sides of the BBQ.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
