Question

Shalom Rav

I wanted to ask what my Hebrew name is, if my English name is Leo, and I am not Cohen or Levi but Israel.

Thank you

Answer

This English name has no Hebrew translation and root, but you can choose a Hebrew name and add it to your name, because it is highly recommended that every Jew have a Hebrew name, since through the letters of a person’s name an abundance descends to a person.

Because in the German language the name Leo means courage and determination, and sometimes this name is used as an abbreviation for the name Leon, which in Hebrew means lion.

Therefore, I would recommend that you add to yourself the Hebrew name “Judah,” which is stated in the Torah in Jacob’s blessings to his sons, “cub of the lion of Judah,” and the lion also symbolizes courage and determination.

The addition of the name should be done in front of ten people who will say a short wording for the change and the addition of the name.

Best wishes for success wherever you turn

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him.
