Question

If the Levites inheritance was the tithe how did they get food in their cities?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

The Levites received the tithes, and their work in the Temple passed on a mission and in place of the entire nation of Israel, for the entire nation of Israel needed the Temple, and yet only the Levites worked there. As the Torah said in במדבר  for reward is for you the passage of your work in the “ohel Moed”.

Indeed, as a result of the Levites having the tithes as food, the Torah said in במדבר18:24 that I gave the tithes of the children of Israel a donation to the Levites, so I told them that among the children of Israel they would not inherit an inheritance.

The forty-eight cities given to the Levites were not given to them as their own cities, just as all the Israelites were given cities for inheritance, but these cities were given to the Levites to inherit only.

As the Torah says, “Command the children of Israel and give the Levites from the inheritance of their estate cities to sit in,” that is, to give them cities to sit in, but not theirs to the inheritance. This is why all the Levites cities take in the murderers by mistake who will live in them until the Blood Redeemer dies.

For this reason, the Gemara also said in Sotta 48: After the destruction of the Temple, the cities of the lot were abolished.
