Question

Where is the stam mishnah that tell us when the cohen is obliged to begin his study of halacha for hsi avodah in the beis hamikdash, at what age he begins that avodah, ett. Until he is no longer obliged for annual mishmeret (milloim) and then the becomes teache in Beit Raban?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

The Mishnah is found in Holin chapter 1 of Mishnah VI, where it is briefly explained that the “cohanim” are disqualified in Moomin and not in years, and the “leviem” are disqualified in years and not in Moomin.

The same is explained in the Talmud Cholin 24, that the priests work without age restrictions, but from the age of thirteen the priest can begin to work, and continues to work as long as he is able to do so.

However, the rambam wrote that although a thirteen-year-old priest may work, his fellow priests do not allow him to work in the Temple until he reaches the age of twenty.

It is important to note that in this regard, the “levieim” differ from priests, as “levieim” at the age of twenty-five begin to learn the work of the priests, and from the age of thirty begin to work until the age of fifty years.

Wishing you success

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
