Question

In the Indianapolis 500, the winner has to kneel and kiss the bricks on the track. Would a Jew be allowed to do this?

Answer

I do not know the origin of this custom, but the answer is: kneeling and kissing the bricks is permitted if it is simply part of the race’s tradition and serves as a victory ceremony for the winners.

However, if kissing the bricks represents a symbol of idol worship or originates from the customs of idolaters, it would be forbidden.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
