Hello

I am the daughter of Ashkenazi parents, and so I practiced Ashkenazi customs until my marriage to a member of the Sephardic comס;munity, when the rabbis instructed me that I should accept my husband’s customs. Now my husband has died, and I have asked whether I should return to the customs of Ashkenazi as my parents do, or should I remain with the customs of the Sephardic people, to whom I have already become accustomed to.

With thanks and blessing

Answer:

A woman that got married has to follow her husband’s customs. And if she is divorced or her husband died, if she has children or grandchildren, etc. from her husband she should continue the customs of her husband [who died, or divorced her], and if not, she returns to the customs of her father’s house.

Therefore, if you have an existing generation from your husband, child or girl, grandson or granddaughter, you must follow the customs of the Sephardic, and if not, you must re-practice the customs of your father’s house.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
