Question

I wanted to ask: Is it permissible to remove dirt and peels when I’m choosing vegetables in the supermarket? Hello and blessings.

Answer

“You should not remove clumps of dirt stuck to vegetables. Likewise, you should not remove the outer peel of an onion, fennel, corn, etc., even if you don’t want to buy them because the attached leaves are rotten, etc. Also, you should not pluck tomatoes from their attached stems and leave the stems in the store if the purpose is to profit from the weight of the stems. Those who do so should be concerned that they are engaging in theft.”

PLEASE NOTE*

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
