Question

Is it permissible for men in Judaism to marry more than one wife, as they do in the Muslim religion?

Thank you

Answer

Hello & Greetings

According to the Torah, it is not forbidden for a man to marry more than one wife, insofar as he is able to take care of the needs of all his wives in all respects.

However, today it is not customary for a man to marry more than one wife, and in some countries this is even prohibited by bigamy law, despite Jewish law, a man may not marry another wife over his wife, since we assume in a clear estimate that the opinion of the bride and groom at the time of marriage was that the man should not marry another wife over his wife, and only on this basis did his wife agree to marry him.

In addition, today many members of the sfardic communities swear that the groom will not marry another wife over his wife, and it is forbidden to violate this oath.

Even Ashkenazim who do not usually swear under the chuppah are forbidden to marry a second wife, since, according to the ‘Rama’, they act in accordance with the boycott that ‘Rabbeinu Gershom’ boycotted at the time against anyone who marries another wife.

Therefore, in fact, although the Torah did not forbid a man to marry more than one wife, according to current halacha this is forbidden, for the aforementioned reasons.
