Question

My daughter’s school is making all the students sign a document stating that they will not use a computer, even with a filter. If she doesn’t sign it, they will question her and she will have to reveal that I allow her to use a computer with a filter, resulting in her expulsion from the school. Is it permissible for her to sign a private disclaimer stating that she is signing the school’s document under duress? Is this considered lying?

Answer

Hello and best regards,

I will preface by saying in general that, for the good of your daughter, it is correct to comply with the school regulations for three reasons:

  1. Since the school is preparing for the spirit of the girls and their holiness, your daughter should not be unusual from the rest of her friends.
  2. In the end, everything is heard and this may be known to the school, so you should avoid it.
  3. On the part of education, it is wrong to teach the daughter to lie.

If you do decide to let her use the computer, there is a permit “in such a time of stress” to allow signing, based on 2. Heatherim, 1. Lying by writing that knowing how many poskim wrote that can be allowed. 2. A lie for the benefit that she will not be removed from a great education, as well as a permit of a commandment that will remain in a good place of study, should be alleviated.

And the listener to the voice of the wise is a comfortable wise spirit.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Meir Pinhasi

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him.
