Question

Is mysticism evil?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

Mysticism is not a bad thing in itself, but practicing it and demanding it is a bad thing.

Mysticism means irrational matters that go against human logic, we as the Jewish people know and believe that there is an omnipotent spiritual higher power that can do anything, so we also believe in spiritual words that contradict logic.

Therefore, it cannot be said that mysticism is a bad thing; on the contrary, the more spiritual a person is, the more he begins to understand in his common sense how things that he thought to be mystical and irrational are not, but are understood by clear logic. Just as we may see natural chemical phenomena as mystical matters, while the chemist who knows how these phenomena arise understands that these phenomena are not mystical but natural and logical.

But engaging in mysticism too much is not the right thing according to the Torah, as the Torah commands, “Be innocent with the Lord your G-d,” and from this commandment we learn not to seek the fortunes or the miraculous from us. And sometimes there is even a prohibition, such as the prohibition to preach after the dead, to ask necromancers or fortune tellers.

That is, on the one hand, we, as a believing people, know how to believe that there are wonderful and transcendent things from our understanding, on the other hand we do not concern ourselves too much with mysticism and have even been commanded not to demand or act according to mystical things.

PLEASE NOTE*

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
