Question

Hello Rabbi
I was wondering if halachically Tarot cards have an issur of karet. Does it matter if the Tarot cards are specifically done for the individual or if one watches a video on YouTube that does a collective reading?
Also, when it comes to astrology, not just to find out about personality but to find out about the future? Is that an aveira? If yes, what kind? (Karet or something else)? With regards to tarot cards and astrology is there a need to do teshuva? If so is it different from teshuva for other aveiras?
If it does fall under kares? How does one do teshuva for this aveira?

Thank you

Answer

Hello & Greetings

The use of tarot cards to predict fortunes is forbidden according to the Torah, because the Torah commanded to be innocent with the Lord Hashem, and some “poskim” say that even if it is forbidden from the torah “you shall not guess or be tortured”.

However, the use of tarot cards to reveal personality traits, etc., is not forbidden by the Torah.

I can’t help but tell you that according to Judaism and human intellect, the use of tarot cards is a parasitic belief, and every reasonable person understands that it has no basis other than a popular belief that has no source or basis.

In any case, this offense is not a karet, and it is not forbidden to watch other people do it to themselves, but we must not use it to predict fortunes, and even when others do it we cannot believe or act according to the consequences they bring up in the cards.

The repentance to those who passed and used these cards and acted according to them, as an repentance for all offenses, that is: to repent of the transgression that was committed, to confess and accept for the future not to repeat this offense. In order to further correct the iniquity, he will take it upon himself to become strengthened by naïve faith in the Creator, that everything from Him will be blessed and there is no other force without Him, and He can change nature with His mercy and the power of prayer whenever He sees fit.

And God in your mercy will influence you with abundance, blessing and success

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him.
