Question

Why God chose Abraham to be the “father” of the Jewish people?

Answer

Hello & Greetings

Avraham already knew the Creator of the universe at the age of three, by virtue of contemplation of creation itself. However, he was not satisfied with his faith, but fought for this faith in the Creator of the universe against all his contemporaries, and against the whole world that at that time worshipped idolatry and believed in statues or stars and zodiac signs, even with Tarach his father fought, for as is known, Tarach was a worshipper of idolatry and even had a shop selling statues.

In addition, Hashem gave Avraham ten difficult trials to see if he would withstand the trial and continue to believe in him.

And after the attempt in which Avraham was thrown into the furnace of fire, for not wanting to bow down to the statue, and not wanting to renounce his firm faith in the Creator of the Universe, Hashem chose him to be the father of the Jewish people.

As the verse in Nehemiah chapter 9, verse 7 says: “אַתָּה־הוּא֙ ה’ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּחַ֙רְתָּ֙ בְּאַבְרָ֔ם וְהוֹצֵאת֖וֹ מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים וְשַׂ֥מְתָּ שְּׁמ֖וֹ אַבְרָהָֽם”.” In other words, Hashem’s choice of Avraham was in light of his resistance to the trial of אור כשדים.

Also, since the Holy One, blessed be He, recognized Avraham to educate and command his sons and family after him to keep the way of Hashem, therefore Hashem added and blessed Avraham that he would be a the father of the nation and will have a great generation from him.

As is explained in the words of the verses in Genesis chapter 18, verses 18-19:

May we be blessed to bring satisfaction to our Creator and to Avraham, the father of our nation.
