Question

How do I get my friend to become stronger with religion in order to get closer to God? I want to be more religious. When we first went out, I wasn’t religious. I don’t want to leave him just because I’ve changed. But he does not follow the ways of the Torah.

Answer

Hello and regards,

First of all I will write to you what mistake not to do, and unfortunately many fail at this and cause their partner withdrawal rather than closeness.

Sometimes when we see the beauty in religion, I very much want others to get to know this beauty as well, and out of good will, we often impose on it in one way or another, and really this is wrong, by force and strength and on the obligatory side, only from distances and not from close places, even if it is done with good thought.

What should you do to bring it closer?

  1. In my opinion, you should show your partner how happy you are in religion, you have to talk to him a lot about the good things you experience in the Jewish religion, the connection and closeness to God, the beauty and modesty you were exposed to, how good you are, you have to emphasize to him the differences between what you are today and what you were.

  2. The main difficulty in making a change is because they think that if we become religious, our entire inner and outer world needs to change, tell him, that he can continue to be what he was until today, and this does not require any real change, only that he can put on tefillin for 5 minutes at home in the morning, and pray in his own way to G-d, and so on, and his identity will not change.

  3. If he truly loves you, he will do anything to come after you, if, of course, he sees, experiences and feels the sweetness of religion, otherwise nothing will help, so he should not be burdened on one day, keeping the entire Torah, but moving him closer little by little, each time something smaller.

And I have no doubt that you are powerful and moral and you will succeed in this, of course with a lot of prayer to G-d blessed, “and those who come to be purified are helped from heaven.”

We will be happy to be attentive to any questions,

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
