Your Question: What is the Ashkenazic custom regarding Yahrzeit when there are two months of Adar. My mother’s Yahrzeit is Adar 13, which is usually Taanit Esther. Do I say Kaddish in both months, the first month or the second month (on Taanit Esther).
Answer:
Acording to the Ashkenazic custom the year your mother died was a “simple” year, and this year is a leap year, therefore the Yartzheit will be Adar alef, the first month is the main month, and therefore on this date you must follow all the laws of the menhagim of the Yartzheit day, aliyah to the tomb, to fast, to study, candle of remembrance, Kaddish and feas
But acording to the Sephardim Since the year your mother died was a “simple” year, and this year is a leap year, therefore the Yartzheit will be ט’ Adar Bet, the second month is the main month and the first month is nothing more than an addition to the leap year, and therefore on this date you must follow all the laws of the menhagim of the Yartzheit day, aliyah to the tomb, to fast, to study, candle of remembrance, Kaddish and feast.
