Seder Night Laws – According to the rulings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztl

According to the rulings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztl

Seder Night Laws

  • The best thing is to start the Seder on Pesach night, just after the rising of the stars, so that the mitzvah of four cups must be at night. And in any case if he don’t have another choice, it is permissible to make Kiddush after sunset, but the Seder Pesach night will not begin until after the rising of the stars.
  • Need to turn around(Haseva) by drinking four glasses, eating Matzah, eating the Korech, and eating the Afikoman. Therefore, if he ate Matzah without Haseva, he should go back and eat, and if he drank four cups without Haseva, he should return to drink with Haseva. And even in a third or fourth glass. The Haseva should be on the left side, and if he did the Haseva on the right side, it is like that he did not turn at all.
  • If he forgot to turn in the first glass, and remembered after drinking it, when he returns to drink again, he drinks without the blessing of the vine, since the blessing of Bore Pri Hagefen is exempt until the second glass, and until at all. And if he does not remember until he has finished the blessing Asher Gahalenu, he will drink one cup in the Haseva instead of the first cup of the Kiddush, and he will stay a little, and he will pour a second cup and he will delay in the Haseva.
  • The cup rate is the Revihit (fourth) log, which is eighty-one cc after pouring. And need to drink the whole glass, and in retrospect if he drank most of it ,it is all right. And it is right to be careful to drink “fourth” at once time from the kiddush cup, so that kiddush will be at the same place of the meal. In any case, it is not for delay because the Pesach Haggadah and the story of the Exodus from Egypt were not considered stopping.
  • It should drink the Revihit at once [to a Revihit drinking time, and not to the time of drink the whole glass]. And he will not stop drinking intermittently, and in retrospect if he drank the cup intermittently, but did not stay too long (time of eat ‘Pras’), he did the mitzva, and he not should drink again. And especially in the last glasses. But if he stayed in the middle of drinking a Revihit too much time, by stopping a few times, even in retrospect he didn’t made the mitzvah.

Kadesh

  • If someone forget to bless Shehechianu at Pesach night at the time of Kiddush, and began the Seder and read the Haggadah, if he remembers before blessing Asher Gahalanu at the end of the Haggadah, he will bless it then. And if he does not remember until after this blessing, he no longer needs to bless the blessing Shehechianu. [Precisely on the Feast of Sukkot one can bless all the seven days of the feast].
  • He will drink the cup of Kiddush at the Haseva, and does not have to bless – Beracha Acharona. And if he was starving or hungry, it is permissible to eat fruit and rice after the Kiddush.
  • It is customary to eat an egg that is afflicted after the Kiddush on Pesach night, and say “Zecher Lekorban Chagiga’ (a memorial to a celebration sacrifice). And if he ate like a Kazait – will bless Nefashot, before eating the celery. [at eating as a Kazait from the celery does not bless Nefashot, otherwise the blessing of Hahadama relieves the Maror, and if he blesses Nefashot he will bless Hahadama about the Maror]. And according to this the food is stewed after the Kiddush because there is a break until the blessing of the food – he need will bless Nefashot, because it is not part of the mitzvah of the Haggadah.

Urchatz

  • He takes his hands legally washing hands to eat like he doing always, in all grammar and details, to dip the celery in the drink, and will not bless the washing of hands, and will not speak until after the blessing and eating of the celery, because immediately need to blessing.
  • If he made a mistake and blessed “for washing hands” for taking for the purpose of dipping it in a drink, it is good that he does not keep his hands clean, and by the distraction he can later bless before taking out again for washing hands for eating Hamotsi. And the blessing he initially blessed is not important for the blessing to be nullified(Beracha Levatala).

 Karpas

  • First of all, we should add some celery and dip it in vinegar. If one dips in lemon water and salt, he should mix water in it until the majority is water, since he takes his hands to thing that his dip in the drink.
  • Eating the celery does not need to be with Haseva. And it is enough for him to eat less than Kazait, and even if he wanted to eat Kazait from the celery he is not allowed, and if he made a mistake and ate Kazait he would not bless Nefashot, for the blessing of Hahadama relieves the Maror. And it is good that he will eat less per 18 gram. And if he erred and ate Kazait from the celery and passed and blessed Nefashot, he should not bless Hahadama about the Maror.

Yachatz

  • Before he begins to read the Haggadah, he will take from the three Matzahs laid before him, the middle Matzah, and perform it for two. It is customary to make the middle Matzah in the shape of a ד and ו, and the large part in the shape of ו is placed in the afikoman, and the small part in the shape of ד is placed between the matzos, and it is by the way of Kabbala. And will not cut with a knife, but with his hand.
  • Someone that his Matzah is very thin, that if he press the middle Matzah -every part of the Matzah don’t have Kazait, nevertheless he will press the middle Matzah, and then he will complete it with another reserved Matzah Kazait – while eating the Matzah, and while eating the Afikoman.

   Magid

  • The reading of the Haggadah should not be preceded before the rising of the stars of Pesach night, so that it will surely be night, and if he read the Haggadah between the suns(Shkiha), and if he rode he didn’t make the Mitzva, since the mitzvah of the Haggadah is from the Torah, and he need to read again.
  • Do not stop talking in the middle of the Haggadah, only for a great need, and it is also right to not smoke cigarettes in the middle of the reading of the Haggadah and Halel, although this year the Seder night on Saturday night is forbidden in any case.

A second glass

  • After blessing the blessing Asher Gaalanu, until Gaal Yisrael, the second glass is drunk on the left turn(Haseva), and if he forgets and drinks without the turn, he returns and drinks on the turn and there is no need to repeat the blessing Bore Pri Hagefen, even if he is not used to drinking wine in the middle of his meal. And also he will not bless after him a last blessing on the vine, because the blessing of food (Birkat Hamazon) has been dismissed.
  • It is our custom not to blesss Bore Pri Hagefen except for the first and third cups only.
  • If he has no wine he will be able to bless Asher Gahalanu even without a glass.
  • The time of the Mitzva of the Haggadah and the story of the Exodus lasted all night, and until snatched sleep. And in any case, to begin with, the Mitzva to read the Haggadah and the blessing Asher Gahalanu before midnight, but if we continue reading the Haggadah until after midnight, we can bless the blessing Asher Gahalanu.

Rochtza

  • He will take his hands as usually, and bless the washing of hands, and if he knows that he has not distracted himself from the first washing until now, he will wash without blessing, and he must be careful at first to do the washing in his house, and not go out into the yard.
  • If when he wash his hands at the first time(Urchatz), he forgot and blessed for washing hands, it is good that he does not keep his hands clean so that he can go back and wash hands for a meal again with a blessing, and the blesses are not Levatala.

Motzi Matzah

  • It is our custom not to eat roast on Pesach night. Therefore the arm(Zeroa) that used to be roasted and placed in a bowl of Seder, must not be eaten on Pesach night.
  • Need to think about the eating of the Matzah -to get out by the obligation of eating Matzah from the Torah.
  • He will take the Matzah in the order he laid, the slice between the two perfections, and hold it in his hand and bless Hamotsi and Hal Hachilat Matzah. And it is customary that after the blessing he drops the third Matzah from his hand, and remains the other Matsot and blesses “Hal Hachilat Matszah.” And cut from the top complement and from the slice of the two together, as Kazait (according to the volume) of each, and dipped in salt and eaten in Haseva together. Since it is not possible to eat about two Kazaits together, the taker will eat first from the first Matzah that it is the top complement, and then of eating Matzah which is the slice, and in retrospect if he ate as one Kazait, either from the whole or from the slice came out.
  • There is no need to divide the rest of the Matzahs from the reserved Matzah which is outside the table twice as Kazait, but for the first time it is enough for everyone to eat reserved Matzah Kazait.
  • He will not speak until he first tastes a Kazait from the Matzah, and if he started eating a little and then spoke, there is no need to go back and bless, since he started with the mitzvah. And then he shall give to all the members so that they may eat immediately in Haseva, and after he has finished giving to them, he shall eat the two Kazaits in Haseva. And it is customary to prepare before washing hands from the Matzah outside the table as Kazait for each of the members so that there will be no break between the blessings and eating.
  • You have to turn to the left when eating Matzah, and if you do not turn, you have to go back and eat Kazait Matzah in Haseva, and can not rely on the cover that eats Matzah and Maror in Haseva. But will not bless, even if he has stopped in idle conversation in the meantime. But woman who ate Kazait Matzah without Haseva it’s alright and she does the Mitzva and does not have to go back and eat at Haseva.
  • Even he who eats two Kazaits should not put the two Kazaits in his mouth at once and eat them. And even in one Kazait should not be aggravated and eaten at once, but eat little by little one after the other. Although you have to eat the Matzah in order to eat Achilat Pras, which is six minutes to seven and a half minutes. And it’s good to Lehachmir and finish eating the Kazait in four minutes.
  • Need to chew the Matzah nicely, and then swallow. And in retrospect if he swallowed the Matzah without chewing first, he did the Mitzva.
  • Those who are not in the health line, or an old man who finds it difficult to eat Kazait Matzah alone, can crumble the Matzah into small pieces and eat it. And can do even at first option(Lechatchila) dipping in water or wine, or other fruit juices, and eat. But he will not straighten the Matzah in them, he will only dip and eat.
  • The Matzah Kazait should be eaten as the way it is eaten, so that if it was wrapped in other food it is not Mitzva. In any case, if you dipped the Matzah in the drink, it came out, since the dipping is a small and void thing about the Matzah.
  • And the same thing is when he ate the Matzah – it was very hot until his throat was burnt from it, or he mixed something bitter in it and ate, it did not made the Mitzva. And should return and eat, but will not bless again.
  • Anyone who eats Matzah is harmful to his health according to the doctors’ instructions and may bring it to be sick, even if there is no danger in it, he will not eat Matzah at all, and the same is true of eating Maror. And if he wanted to aggravate himself(Lehachmir), in any case he would not bless eating Matzah.
  • If the doctors agreed that he should eat a little Matzah, he should to eat half Kazait or to eat a rate of eighteen grams of Matzah and maror. And if he is not allowed to do that either, he will eat whatever he is, but will not bless for half Kazait.
  • If the doctors are content with the thing that if he eats Matzah he may get sick and fall to bad – because of eating the Matzah, he will eat like a Kazait Matzah with blessing, and a Mitzvah observer did not know anything bad. And it is only when there is no fear of danger at all, but instead of fear of danger, even if the doctors are doubtful about it, he must not put himself in the place of fear of danger. And if he did that and also ate with a blessing, apart from the fact that his blessing is void(Levatala), but also the Mitzvah didn’t was- because it was Avera.
  • Anyone who is sensitive to eating grain of wheat, and can bring it to sick, can keep Matzah eating Matzah in oat grain (Shibolet Shual), which even oats are a kind of grain and can be used to make Mitzvah of eating Matzah.
  • Matzah soaked in water, even 24 hours, it is Mitzva of Matsah, and especially not soft. And especially for those who regret eating dry Matzah. But Matzah soaked in wine or fruit water or stew is not obligatory.
  • It is not a Mitzvah with cooked Matzah, so do not serve the Matzah in hot soup in the first dish (Kli Rishon) that the hand dislikes(Yad Soledet), and if the hand does not dislike it is allowed.
  • Those who are not in the health line and find it difficult to eat the Matzah alone, may dip the Matzah in a plate of soup or in a cup of hot coffee or tea when the hand does not dislike them.
  • Sick or old man that is difficult to eat the Matzah Kazait alone, the Matzah can be crumbled into thin crumbs and eaten, but not crushed.
  • Those whose the time of their birth falls on the night of Seder, in the year in which a bar mitzvah is performed, do not have to wait to eat Matzah until the time of birth arrives, since from the time of the stars arrived come out, the mitzvah has already become obligatory. And from any place that is strict to eat more Kazait Matzah, after the time of its birth, [before midnight] a blessing will come upon it.
  • Time to eat Matzah initially until midnight, and if he delay until after midnight, the Matzah will be eaten without blessing. And if the night’s over, the Mitzva time is over.
  • There is no obligation to pay the Matzah fees before Pesach, and can be paid even after the holiday. And the stricter to pay the money before the holiday will come – upon him a blessing.

Maror

  • Eating Matzah and Maror should be at the night after the stars come out(Tset Hakochavim), and if he eaten between the suns(Shkiha) should be eaten again at night.
  • Best time to eat Maror until midnight, and if he linger until after midnight, the Maror will eat without blessing, and if this time had passed there are no Mitzva.
  • Before eating the Maror it should think about that he make a Mitzva of Maror, and if he forgot and ate without the intention of Mitzvah it alright.
  • Need to take Maror Kazait (lettuce) and will invest some of it in the Charoset, and the one who Machmir to invest all the Maror at the Charoset will be blessed. But will not stay the Maror in it, so that the taste of thr Maror will not be eliminated, and therefore should need also shake the Charoset above it, and bless “Hal Hachilat Maror”, and he will eat without Haseva.
  • If he made a mistake and blessed “Lehechol Maror”, if he is in the middle of speaking(Toch Kedey Dibur), he will correct and say “Hal Hachilat Maror”. And if he has passed this time, there is no need to repeat the blessing, because it’s also good.
  • Maror need to be not pickled or boiled.
  • If he has no vegetables for the first dip less then lettuce, he will bless him in the first dip the “Boreh Pri Hahadama” and “Hal Hachilat Maror”, and eat from it Kazait, and in the second dip he will dip in the Charoset and eat without blessing, because the first blessing continue even after the Matzah.
  • It need to should to take Maror (lettuce) and celery in a special crop where there is no chance to worms. And yet it is good to review them and examine them as much as possible.
  • Leafs of Maror aren’t good for the Mitzva-unless they are damp. So it’s good to soak the leaves in water that it will remain moist, but will not soak them in water 24 hours so that they are not pickled. Because it’s not a Mitzva with pickled Maror and neither with rash or boiled.
  • Those whom the doctors fear if he eats Maror – he fall ill, will not eat Maror, Safek Derabanan Lekula. And even if he wants to Lehachmir and eat Maror, he can’t bless about it.
  • It is good and right to feel and eat the Maror at the way of eating as much as possible, and in any case if he ate the Maror not as his way of eating, he goes back and eats again but without blessing. And if something bitter has been mixed in it that is not of the Maror’s kinds,he didn’t made the Mitzca and needs to be eaten again.
  • Whoever intended to eat Matzah and Maror, and blessed them, and after eating half Kazait was raped and could not continue eating at all, did not consider his blessing that he blessed eating Matzah, a blessing to nullify(Beracha Levatala), since when he blessed he minded to eat Kazait.
  • It is permissible to consider the Matzah on the night of Pesach itself, in order to know if it has as much Shiur of Kazait as it needs, and also at Maror. And even in private scales used at home, which are weighed by a hand, it should be facilitated, since it weighs for the purpose of Mitzvah, provided they are without a battery.

Korech

  • He will take as a Kazait Matzah, from the third Matzah, and wrap it with a Maror Kazait and dip it in Charoset, and say: Remember the temple like Hilel(Zecher Lamikdash Kehilel) etc., and eat it together in Haseva. Do not mix celery or other vegetables in the cover.
  • From the moment he blesses the eating of Matzah and Maror, he will not talk about anything that is not of interest to the meal, until he eats this cover, so that the blessing of Matzah and maror will rise to this cover as well. And if he speak he does not have to return and bless, since there is no prohibition.
  • The cover should be eaten at Haseva, and in any case, those who forgot and ate the cover without Haseva, if it is difficult for him to return and eat at Haseva, there is no need to return and eat. And especially for women that it easier that they are not needs. And who is wants to aggravate and eat again in Haseva, a blessing will come upon him.
  • If he forgot to dip the cover in the Charoset, and it is difficult for him to go back and eat again, it is obligatory and he does not have to go back and eat the cover by dipping the Charoset. And in any case, since it is good, it is better that he will take Matzah and something of the Maror and bind them and baptize them in Charoset and eat them in Haseva remember to the temple.
  • If he preceded and ate the Matzah and the Maror are bound together, before he ate the Matzah by itself and the Maror by itself, he did not made the Mitzvah of Matza nor by the Mitzvah of Maror, and should go back and eat the Matzah by itself and the Maror by itself. And if he speaks in the meantime [other than the matters of the mitzvah], he should also return and bless, and if he does not speak again he don’t need to bless, that the cover eating is not considered a break.
  • Anyone who finds it difficult to eat as a Maror for Kazait on the cover, may facilitate it (Lehakel),and take whatever is Maror. And if it is very difficult for him, he may not eat the cover at all, since the cover is only for the memory only. Thus each person can facilitate this where necessary and eat about a third of an egg (about eighteen grams) from the Matzah, and about a third of an egg from the Maror.
  • If he does not remember from the cover until he has taken his hands to the last water, he will not return to eating the cover, which has already done by eating the Matzah and the Maror that each ate on his own.

Sholchan Orech

  • He will set his table and feed his heart with joy, as the good hand of G-d is upon him. And the wise man has his eyes in his head that he will not eat too much, that he may eat the Afikomen with appetite, and not coarse eating, and that he should not have to bother.
  • When Pesach night falls on Shabbat, there is no need to eat more like Kazait Matzah, for Shabbat honor.
  • It is our custom not to eat roast on Pesach night. Therefore the arm that is placed in a bowl of order, must not be eaten on Leyl Haseder. And it should not to eat pot roast, in any case the roast that are also cooked it should be much easier.
  • Since this year Seder night falls on a Saturday night the arm should be roasted on a Friday. But when Seder night falls on a weekday if he forgot and did not roast the arm on the eve of Pesach, it is permissible to roast it on Pesach night and will eat tomorrow at Yom Tov.
  • Even on Seder night, as on other holydays, there is no need to leave a free table at a male table for the destruction(Zecher Lachurban).

 Tsafun

  • After the end of the whole meal, Afikoman eats by reserved Matzah , which is placed under the tablecloth as Kazait for each, a reminder of Pesach tribute that eaten by satiety. And it is customary to say “Zecher Lekorban Pesach.” And eaten alone without a mixture of relish, so that there will be a Matzah taste in his mouth.
  • Some are strict about eating two Kazaits, one male for Pesach, and one male for Matzah that eaten with it, and what is must is only one Kazait, since the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch is set. And will think in his eating that this is a reminder of Pesach tribute, and it is also remember of the Matzah that eaten with Pesach, and one memory comes up here and there.
  • Whoever wants to aggravate and eat as much as the rate of two Kazaits, will aggravate himself and a blessing will come upon him, and it is enough for him to eat twice the rate of eighteen grams. And if the Matzah that hided for Afikoman is not sufficient for the all family, he will take another reserved Matzah.
  • He will eat the Afikoman for appetite and with Haseva, and will not bless about it. And if he was so full, that he ceased to eat it, he did not go out by the duty of eating Afikoman, and therefore he will pay attention to it at the time of his meal, that he will not eat so, until he can’t eating Afikoman. And in any case, if he does not eat the afikoman for such an appetite, but the Afikoman isn’t ceased him, it’s alright, because he should be eaten by satiety. And it is right to eat the Afikoman while lusting a little to eat.
  • Be careful to eat Afikoman before midnight, and in retrospect it is obligatory even after midnight.
  • One should also pay attention and warn the members of his household, to turn while eating the afikoman, that otherwise he will have to eat it again, in Haseva.
  • If he has not turned to Afikoman, if he has not yet blessed the food blessing, and the second eating is not difficult for him, he has to go back and eat Afikoman at Haseva. And if it is difficult for him, there is no need to push himself to go back and eat at Haseva, and rely on the easers Poskim. And if he has already blessed Birkat Hamazon and then remembered, there is no need to go back and eat in Haseva. And relies on what he ate by turning the first Kazait.
  • If the Matzah he left for Afikoman is lost or eaten, he will take another Matzah and eat it for Afikoman.
  • If he forgot to eat the Afikoman, and remembered another taken his hands to the last water(Maim Acharonim) or after  he said “Hav Lan Venivrich”, the Afikoman would eat then without the bless of Hamotzi.
  • If he has already started with Birkat Hamzon and remembers that he did not eat Afikoman, he will finish the blessing, and will not stop after the blessing of Hazan Et Hakol, to eat the Afikoman, but will end the all blessing of food. And will return and take his hands [and when he eats from the Matzah less than an egg (Kabeytza) he takes his hands without blessing. And if he eats a rate like an egg (Kabeytza), he should bless the washing of hands], and will bless Hamotzi and he will eat the Afikoman, and he will bless the Birkat Hamazon on the cup and drink the cup. And the same is true when he remember before he blessed Bore Pri Hagefen about the vine after Birkat Hamazon, that he would take his hands and bless Hamotzi again to eat the afikoman and bless Birkat Hamzon on the glass and bless Bore Pri Hagefen and drink the cup.
  • If he remember after the third cup that the Afikoman did not eat, in our places that used to make preservation Matza from the time of harvest, he takes his hands and blesses the Emotzi and eats Afikoman, and blesses Birkat Hamazon without a glass. And if he ate Matzah Shemura within his meal, there is no need to go back and eat Afikoman and bless again for it.
  • He will not eat the Afikoman in two places, and even in one room at two tables, unless the faces of the Seder’s members were against each other, which is then considered as one place.
  • One who sleeps in the middle of eating the Afikoman [even ate anything] and wakes up, does not return to eating. But a group of members who sleep some in the middle of eating Afikomen, come back and eat. And if everyone sleeps and wakes up, they will not eat, but if they doze off, everyone will eat. And all of this when sleeping in the middle of eating the Afikoman, but sleeping in the middle of the meal before the Afikoman is not a break. And in sleeping on of his hands, or on the table – it should to wash hands without a blessing, but not bless Hamotzi.
  • It is forbidden to eat anything other after Afikoman, and if he erred and ate fruit and the like, he goes back and eats Afikoman, so that the taste of Matzah remains in his mouth. And if he has blessed Birkat Hamazon, he does not have to go back and eat Afikoman.
  • It is permissible to drink water or other drinks that are not intoxicating after Afikoman, but wine or other intoxicating drinks are not allowed to drink, except for two glasses of the Hagada. And anyone who is used to smoking cigarettes is allowed to smoke after eating the Afikoman. And in any case, smoking is not allowed when Seder night falls on Saturday night.

  • Put a sign to say in the blessing of food [“Retze Vehachalitsenu”] “Yahale Veyavo”, and if he was wrong and did not say, if he remembers when he said Baruch Ata Hashem, before he finishes “Bone Yerushalayim”, say “Lamdeni Chukecha” and countinue to say “Yahale Veyavo”, And if he does not remember until he began to say Bone Yerushalaim, he says between the blessing of the Bone Yerushalaim and the blessing of “Hatov Vehametiv”, ברוך
  •  אתה ה’ אלקינו מלך העולם אשר נתן וכו’. וחותם בא”י מקדש [השבת] ישראל והזמנים.

And also if he began with the blessing of “Hatov Vehametiv” when he stop at “Haolam”, and immediately remembered, he will end אשר נתן ימים טובים לעמו ישראל וכו’. And if he does not remember until he began to say Lahad/Hahel – returns to the head of Birkat Hamazon, and even remember at the Halel, he should go back and bless Birkat Hamazon on the glass, and the law of the woman as the law of the man in it.

  • When he has finished the blessing of the food, will bless Hagefen, and aim to exempt a fourth glass, and the glass will be drunk in Haseva, and if he does not drink at Haeva, he drinks in Haseva without blessing.
  • Do not drink wine between the third and fourth glasses.
  • When there is a groom on Pesach night, the grooms’ blessing should be blessed on the same cup that the food blessing is blessed on, and they will not bring another cup to the grooms’ blessing, and the greeter can bless the grooms’ blessing on his cup, and if he will want to bless about the glass of the groom it’s alright, and the costume is to bless at first the bless about the wine and after that ‘Asher Bara’.

Halel

  • Be careful to finish the Halel before midnight (Chatzot), as well as drinking a fourth glass, and in any case if he is late until after midnight, he can bless “Yehalelucha”.
  • Be careful that he also drinks the fourth cup in Haseva, and does not reduce from a rate of Revihit, [unless he drank Revihit at the third cup with Haseva], so that he may bless a last blessing. And if he forgot and did not turn around, if there was some wine left in the glass, he would come back and fill it and drink in the turning without the blessing of the vine. In any case, the one who blesses “Bore Pri Hagefen” and relies on the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch, blessings will rest on his head.
  • A mitzvah to return on the night of Pesach after a Zimun to Halel, so that one may say Hodu for two, and the greatest of them says Hodu and the others answer after it.
