Shalom u’vracha,
The festival of Sukkot lasts seven days and always falls on the Hebrew dates of 15 Tishrei through 21 Tishrei. On 22 Tishrei, the festival of Shemini Atzeret takes place, which is also called Simchat Torah.
This year—2025—Sukkot falls on the Gregorian dates of 7/10/2025–13/10/2025.
The first day of Sukkot falls on Tuesday, 7/10, and the final day likewise falls on Tuesday, 13/10.
All the days in between are Chol HaMoed Sukkot.
Although the festival was established as a remembrance of the Clouds of Glory that accompanied the Jewish people when they left Egypt—and, as is known, the Jewish people left Egypt in the month of Nisan rather than Tishrei—the Torah nevertheless established Sukkot in the month of Tishrei.
The reason for this is that Nisan marks the beginning of summer, and a person who goes out to a sukkah might appear to be doing so in order to enjoy the fresh outdoor air, rather than for the sake of the mitzvah. Therefore, the Torah established the festival specifically in Tishrei, when it begins to grow cold outside and people enter their homes. In this way, it is evident to all that we sit in the sukkah in honor of the mitzvah of Hashem, may He be blessed, and not because of the heat in the houses.
With blessings, Chag Sameach,
Rabbi David Ohayon
