Question

I was told it is permissible to “test” Hashem with the mitzvah of tzedakah, though I was never told the parameters of success or failure. This year, I gave approximately 200% of my income to charity (some thousands for Chabad Jewish causes and much more to help my mother), totaling around $40,000. Yet, this year was the most economically destructive of my life. How can I know when the test failed, and how can I reconcile the results with the promise?

Answer

First, I share your pain for the losses you experienced.
What you were told is correct: it is permitted to “test” Hashem through the mitzvah of tzedakah, as the prophet Malachi 3 says, “Test Me in this.” Hashem promises to bestow abundance on those who are diligent in tzedakah.

Giving tzedakah is like a partnership with Hashem: you give, and He provides even more. However, remember that the results are not always immediate; sometimes the reward is long-term. It may take time to see the fruits of your generosity.

Without doubt, Hashem will shower you with great abundance. He knows His partners and blesses them with everything good, often in hidden ways: for example, preserving what you already have, preventing unexpected expenses or problems. The blessing is not always visible in numbers or immediate gains.

Trust that you will see great rewards and blessings in all your endeavors. Strengthen your faith, as Hashem will provide abundant blessings. Continue in prayer, treating Hashem as your partner, and you will see great blessings manifest.

Do not forget to report when you notice the blessings.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
