Regarding what is very common among merchants, who, in order to enhance their sale, add mere words—for example, they say, “Others have already offered the price you wish to pay, but I did not agree,” or the seller says, “This price is my cost price,” or, “I am not making a profit at the amount you named,” when he intends to make a large profit; or he says to the buyer, “You will not find it cheaper,” and all similar expressions—is there an element of falsehood and deception in such statements?
It is a serious prohibition to lie in order to enhance one’s sale. Therefore, even though it is customary among merchants to frequently use these and similar expressions, there is nevertheless a clear prohibition of falsehood, deception, and verbal wrongdoing. Rather, one should praise one’s merchandise based on a genuine quality it possesses, and it is permitted even to add a little to its praise.
