Question

Hello, rabbi

Now I remember that last Purim, when I arrived with my friends to collect money at one of the houses, we danced and I jumped and hit the chandelier with my hand and broke part of the chandelier.

Should I pay for this or apologize to the owner? I saw that those who cause damage on Purim are exempt, what is the halachic decision?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello and welcome

The Rema, in the laws of Purim, decided that the one who causes damage out of joy is exempt. However, the Beit Yosef wrote that this applies only in places where this practice is common. Based on this, Rav Ovadia Yosef, in his book “Hazon Ovadia,” wrote that one should not exempt the perpetrator of harm on Purim.

In fact, damage caused by normal dances practiced in all the houses of the people of Israel should be exempt, according to the opinion of Maran Beit Yosef. Therefore, if the dances were normal as usual, he is exempt. However, if you jumped more than usual in the accepted dances, you must reconcile with the harmed person and ask for his forgiveness or pay him for the damage.

With best regards:
