הרב יוסף חי סימן טוב משיב כהלכה
Country: Israel

Question

Dear Rabbi, in your previous response about the sale of mitzvot and sins, you explained that the sale has no validity whatsoever.

And I asked, what about mutual responsibility, that all Israelites are responsible for one another, for I know there is an opinion that, due to this, the buyer of a transgression of his friend, although the acquisition is not valid, the buyer becomes ‘responsible’ for his friend to repent of the transgression or be punished, and the heavens have the right to demand from the responsible party, if the seller does not repent.

Answer

Dear and esteemed friend, the illustrious Mr. Uri Wilkfort,

The opinion that the sale is an addition due to mutual guarantee is not among the first, moreover, it is an isolated opinion and not consensual. Moreover, it does not seem logical, and the opposite is explained by the early rabbis.
