on: As you are well aware, there are numerous rituals which involve wine: my question is this, what should we use if we are either A) a recovering alcoholic or B) allergic to grapes? In the first case, would any alcoholic (kosher) beverage apply? Such as a cup of vodka or beer, or perhaps a wine made of an alternative fruit such as apples? If the second former, would kosher grape juice fulfill the role that wine does? Thank you

: Indeed, from the point of view of Halacha, grape juice is also kosher for Kiddush, even though it is not intoxicating, that there is no law to drink from the intoxicating drink. And when you do not find grape juice around you, or according to medicine, one cannot drink grape juice, such as sugar sickness, may also sanctify black beer or white beer, both of which are kosher for Kiddush and Havdalah on Shabbat and Yom Tov, as well as “whisky” and “arak” kosher for kiddush. And indeed, if even this is not possible and as you mentioned in your question, such as that person is a recovering alcoholic, he will use grape juice for kiddush to begin with, and if this is also forbidden to him, he will use 100% natural orange juice. Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
