Question

A couple whose wife is required to immerse in the mikveh on Shabbat night has been invited to a family meal for Brit Mila (circumcision) the next day. The wife is too embarrassed to attend the meal without makeup, as it will be noticed that she has immersed in the mikveh. The question is: is it better to postpone the immersion until after Shabbat or to immerse during the ben hashemashot period (between sunset and when the stars can already be seen) and apply makeup during this same period?

Similarly, is a woman whose husband disapproves of her not wearing makeup and her mikveh immersion falls on Shabbat night permitted to immerse between sunset and the stars and apply makeup, or should she postpone the immersion until after Shabbat ends?

Answer

It is permissible, in both cases, to immerse between sunset and the stars and apply makeup immediately during the period between sunset and the stars. In any case, in our time, where “Shabbat makeup” is prescribed, it should be preferred.
