Question

Is there an obligation to sit near the Chanukah candles for half an hour and contemplate them?

Answer

  • If you light candles in the street, according to the law, you must sit next to them while they are lit, for damage reasons, to prevent a fire.
  • In a place where there is no risk of fire and harm to the public, such as lighting the candles at home, there is no obligation to observe the candles during the mandatory lighting time. However, it is a beautiful and good custom to contemplate them, to remember the miracle that G-d did for us in the days of the Hasmoneans, and to talk about the holiness of the day and its laws, see the sources.

PLEASE NOTE*

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
