Question

Hello, esteemed rabbi

I wanted to ask if it is allowed for me (I am a young woman) to travel with a friend when her brother drives us at night or if there is a problem of yichud (seclusion of a man with a woman)?

Thank you

Asnwer

Hello and welcome,

Basically, there is a yichud problem even with two women and one man, but since the man in question is the brother of a friend who will be in the car with you, there is no yichud problem.

Because any woman who is not prohibited from being secluded with a man, like a sister and a brother, is considered a ‘guardian’ and prevents the prohibition of yichud even if another woman who is herself prohibited from isolating with that man joins her.

In general, it is important to note that there is no prohibition of yichud when traveling by car on a road where there are cars all the time and where the windows do not have curtains. Only on a deserted road where a car may not pass every three minutes, or in a car whose windows do not allow seeing the interior, does the prohibition of yichud in the car apply.

With many greetings
