Last Shabbat, while returning from sunrise Shacharit prayers, I found a wallet by the roadside. What should I have done? Am I permitted to take the wallet in order to fulfill the mitzvah of returning lost property, or must I remain and guard the wallet until Shabbat is over? Perhaps I may disregard the lost item altogether because it is muktzeh.
There is no permission to move muktzeh on Shabbat, even for the purpose of fulfilling the mitzvah of returning lost property. Therefore, one who finds a lost item on Shabbat that is muktzeh is not obligated to return it, and you may disregard the lost item.
