Tomb of Tana Hakadosh Rabbi Nachum Ish Gamzu
Rabbi Nachum Ish Gamzu was one of the first Tannaim (sages of the Mishnah era) and teacher of Rabbi Akiva
Hello, I would like to ask.
What is the meaning of sin and sacrifice for the sinner?
Thank you
Hello and welcome
.
The word Cheth (“חטא“) means transgression and sin, and the word chatath (“חטאת“) describes the sacrifice that the sinner brings for his sin; therefore, the sacrifice is called chatath. Likewise, the sacrifice of asham (אשם), is brought for a transgression for which a person is guilty (in Hebrew, asham). Concerning the meaning and atonement of the sacrifice for transgression, when a person sins and commits a transgression by mistake, even if he repents and commits to be careful from now on not to fall into transgression again, he has not yet purified his soul from sin to become as if he had not sinned, until he offers a sacrifice for its atonement.
Therefore, for a grave sin that when committed intentionally is punishable by kareth, when committed culpably (unintentionally), the Torah commanded the sinner to bring a sacrifice of chatath. And when a person repents during the offering of the sacrifice and reflects within himself that this should be done to him after he has sinned and acted like an animal, which has no self-control, he purifies his soul of its animal part (nefesh habahamith) and returns it to the human level.
Sincerely,
Rabbi David Ohayon
PLEASE NOTE*
Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
