Is it allowed to use “garlic powder,” or is there a problem with peeled garlic?
Initially, the opinion of Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt”l was that the use of garlic powder should be prohibited (and although he permitted egg powder and dehydrated onion, garlic powder presents a greater concern – for reasons that will be explained in the sources). After a few years, Maran zt”l began to doubt the prohibition and left the matter as “needing examination.” After some time, witnesses testified in his name that he returned to permitting its use (for such is the way of the wise of Israel, that the older they grow, the more their wisdom increases, and therefore, they are strengthened to permit more).
PLEASE NOTE*
Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
