Question

Hello, rabbi

I have a vegetable cutter [small food processor] that I use all year round just for vegetables, I’ve never used it for chametz.

Do I need to buy a special vegetable cutter for Passover?

It is worth mentioning that I also use the vegetable cutter to chop onions.

Thank you

Answer

Hello and blessings

If the vegetable cutter was not used for fermented foods (chametz), but only for chopping and grinding vegetables, according to the Sephardim, it is not necessary to buy a new vegetable cutter for Passover, just wash it to be able to use it on Passover.

However, according to the opinion of the Ashkenazim, it is preferable not to use it during Passover, and only in case of necessity is it permitted.

Although those interested in being rigorous can purify the vegetable cutter’s knives to meet all opinions.

With best wishes for a kosher and happy Passover

Rabbi David Ohayon
