Question

Hello and welcome

Good morning,

I’m in a hotel with kosher breakfast in Uruguay.

On Shabbat, the kashrut supervisor doesn’t come, but he leaves everything ready before Shabbat. In the hotel, do non-Jews continue to bake bread and heat coffee and milk on Shabbat? Could I eat this on Shabbat?

Thank you very much for the answer.

Answer

Hello and welcome

Food that was prepared for you before Shabbat, and is closed and sealed in such a way that there is no doubt it is kosher food prepared by the supervisor before Shabbat, you can eat it on Shabbat, even if the supervisor is not present.

However, if the food is open and not served in a closed box, you cannot trust that the food being brought to you is kosher, unless there are other signs regarding it.

In any case, even if the food is kosher and sealed with a kashrut seal, you cannot eat it if non-Jews heat the food specifically for you.

However, as long as non-Jews heat the food for others on Shabbat, and not for you, there is no halachic problem with that.
