Question

I am a Cohen and have been working as a maintenance employee for several years in a
large hospital in the United States. Since all the rooms and corridors are interconnected, and
every day in the hospital, several people die, a friend told me that I can't work there because
I am a Cohen. Is he right? Is there any distinction between the deceased being Jews or
Gentiles?

Answer

In a Jewish hospital, it is not permitted to be a maintenance worker in any way, but in a non-רופא
Jewish hospital, it is allowed if the person has already started working there and there is a
financial loss, but ideally, one should also avoid working in a non-Jewish hospital. And being
a doctor or nurse, there are those who allow it even in a Jewish hospital when there is a
financial loss, but in principle, it should also be avoided.

Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
