Is it allowed (and worth it) to celebrate a birthday according to Judaism?
The birthday is a day when a person's fortune strengthens, and it is a propitious day for the
acceptance of prayers. On this day, one should increase the study of the Torah and reflect
on how another year of their life has passed. And if you want to have a meal of thanks to
God for another year, you can do so (especially upon reaching sixty, seventy, or ninety years
– there is more reason for a meal of thanks), and you should recite words of Torah during
the meal so that it is considered a mitzvah meal. But it is better to take the time to dedicate
yourself to the study of the Torah on this important day, rather than increasing meals and
rituals.
However, even if you want to celebrate the birthday, you should not perform vain rituals like
lighting candles on a cake and blowing them out, as these rituals have no origin in Judaism,
and for us, candles are a matter belonging to the deceased, God forbid, and not the living,
and blowing out the candle also has a mystical danger.
PLEASE NOTE*
Attention: You should not learn from one case to another, each case must be analyzed individually. Generally speaking, it's always best to have contact with a Rabbi in person, not just virtual contact. Note that where there is a local Rabbi("Mara Deatra"), one should ask him. The answers are under the responsibility of the rabbi who responded, and not under the responsibility of the website and/or the Head of the Institution.
